第9回盛岡市アイスリンクメモリアルカップ「女子の部」につきましては、開催を見合わせることといたしました。

【女子の部開催に関する本大会の姿勢について】
岩手県盛岡市とカナダ・ビクトリア市は姉妹都市です。かつて国際連盟の事務次長を務め、五千円札の肖像にもなった新渡戸稲造は盛岡市の出身であり、亡くなった地がビクトリア市であったという縁から、両市は姉妹都市提携を結びました。今年はその提携から40周年を迎える記念すべき年です。
「盛岡市アイスリンクメモリアルカップ」は、2015年にカーリング専用施設を併設した複合型氷上競技施設「盛岡市アイスリンク」が供用開始されたことを記念し、杮落としの大会の一つとしてスタートしました。
ちょうど同年から「Asia Pacific Curling Tour」も始まり、以後「World Curling Tour Japan」と形を変えてきた流れの中で、本大会もその一翼を担ってきました。WCT大会としての開催には定義があり、その定義を満たすため、私たちは毎年、様々な努力を重ねて参りました。首都圏のような大きな企業の立地のない中、賞金捻出のための地元企業への働きかけもその一つです。
なぜ私たちはこの大会を継続して開催するのか。
盛岡でカーリング専用施設が整備されるまでの命題は、「競技人口拡大のための普及活動」でした。そして施設の供用開始以降は、「普及」とともに「強化」も重要な命題として加わりました。
普及や交流を目的とした「ビクトリア杯カーリング大会（来年2月に第20回大会を開催予定）」も開催していますが、この「盛岡市アイスリンクメモリアルカップ」は強化のための大会として位置付けています。
第1回および第2回大会は3連休を活用して、男女同一日程で開催していました。しかし、運営側の体力的負担が大きく、スタッフの疲弊が顕著となったため、第3回以降は「運営スタッフの負担をなるべく軽減しつつ」、「1試合あたり8エンドは行う」そして「仕事と両立しているカーラーでも参加できる大会」を志向し、土日で完結する男女別日程の大会としました。
ただその結果として、女子の部は徐々に参加チームが減少し、開催が不安定となっているのが現状です。WCT Japan事務局とも連携しながら、各方面の大会日程をデータベース化したり、オフシーズンの時期を尊重したり、各チームに個別に打診を行ったりと、あらゆる努力を続けてきました。
「需要がないなら女子の部をやめたら？」
「ミックスダブルスにした方がいいのでは？」
といったご意見も頂戴しております。
しかし私たちは、女子チームにもWCTポイントを獲得できる環境を提供し続けることがまずは重要であると考えております。
「ミックスダブルス」もいずれは開催したいと思っておりますが、賞金確保を含めた運営基盤の確立をしつつ、男女の大会を安定運営できるようになってから、と考えております。
今後も様々なトライアンドエラーを繰り返しながら、本大会が選ばれる大会となり続けるよう、そして、この大会で成長したい、また参加したいと思っていただけるような場であるよう、進化を続けてまいります。

[The tournament’s stance on holding the women’s division]Inazo Nitobe was immortalised in a statue. He was born in Morioka City and passed away in Victoria City, which is why the two cities established a sister city relationship. This year marks the 40th anniversary of this partnership, making it a significant year.
The ‘Morioka City Ice Rink Memorial Cup’ was launched in 2015 to commemorate the opening of the Morioka City Ice Rink, a multi-purpose ice sports facility featuring a dedicated curling rink.
This tournament has played a significant role in the ‘Asia Pacific Curling Tour’, which later evolved into the ‘World Curling Tour Japan’, and coincided with the start of the same series in the same year. There are specific criteria for hosting a WCT event, and we have made various efforts every year to meet these criteria. One such effort has been to secure prize money by reaching out to local companies, despite the lack of large corporations in the area.
The Morioka City Ice Rink Memorial Cup began in 2015 as one of the inaugural events celebrating the opening of the Morioka City Ice Rink, a multi-purpose ice sports facility featuring a curling rink.
Coinciding with the launch of the ‘Asia Pacific Curling Tour’ in the same year, which later evolved into the ‘World Curling Tour Japan,’ this tournament has played a significant role in that development. There are specific criteria for hosting a WCT tournament, and we have made various efforts every year to meet those criteria. One such effort has been to secure prize money by reaching out to local companies, despite the lack of large corporations in the area.
Why do we continue to host this tournament?
Until a dedicated curling facility was built in Morioka, our mission was to promote the sport to increase participation. Once the facility opened, we added ‘strengthening’ to our mission alongside ‘promotion’.
We also host the ‘Victoria Cup Curling Tournament’, which is scheduled for February next year and will be the 20th. The tournament aims to promote curling and foster exchanges. In contrast, the ‘Morioka City Ice Rink Memorial Cup’ is a tournament designed to strengthen skills. The first two tournaments were held over a three-day holiday weekend, with men’s and women’s events taking place on the same day. However, due to the significant physical strain on organisers and noticeable staff fatigue, from the third tournament onwards, our aim was to reduce organisers’ workload as much as possible, ensure at least eight ends per match and create a tournament that could be attended by working curlers. Consequently, we adopted separate schedules for men and women over the weekend.
However, the number of teams participating in the women’s division has gradually decreased, and the future of the tournament is now uncertain. In cooperation with the WCT Japan Secretariat, we have made every effort to create a database of tournament schedules, respect the off-season and consult with each team individually.
‘If there is no demand, why not just cancel the women’s division?’
‘Wouldn’t it be better to make it a mixed doubles tournament?’
We have received such opinions.
However, our primary concern is to continue providing an environment in which women’s teams can earn WCT points.
While we do plan to eventually hold a mixed doubles tournament, we will do so only after we have established a stable operational foundation. This includes securing prize money and ensuring that both men’s and women’s tournaments can be held smoothly.
Going forward, we will continue to evolve through trial and error, striving to make this a ‘chosen tournament’ where participants feel they can grow and want to return.
