盛岡市アイスリンクメモリアルカップ大会実行委員会です。
「芽吹き屋presents 第10回盛岡市アイスリンクメモリアルカップ」開催に向けて、現在準備を進めております。
男子の部につきましては、現時点で6チームのエントリーを受け付けましたので、大会の開催を正式に決定し、エントリーいただいたチームの代表者の皆様にはその旨をご連絡いたしました。ただ、本大会はワールドカーリングツアーのポイント対象大会として開催しておりますが、8チームのエントリーがない場合、世界ランキング算出のためのポイントを付与することができません。そのため、男子の部につきましても、6月21日まで引き続きエントリーを受け付けております。
女子の部につきましては、現時点でエントリーが3チームにとどまっております。6月21日頃には開催可否を判断したいと考えていることから、第一次締切を6月7日から、6月15日に延長しました。引き続き、エントリーを心よりお待ちしております。
本大会への参加を、ぜひ前向きにご検討いただけますと幸いです。
盛岡市アイスリンクメモリアルカップについて
本大会は、2015年に盛岡市にカーリング専用シート2シートを併設した通年型氷上競技施設が供用開始となったことを記念して始まりました。
ちょうどその年から、現在のワールドカーリングツアーの枠組みが始まったこともあり、本大会は初年度からその一翼を担ってまいりました。
2015年以前、岩手県にはカーリング専用施設はありませんでした。
そのため、一般市民の皆様にカーリングという競技に親しんでいただくこと、そして、専用施設が整備された後も、市民の皆様から「なぜこのような施設を建設したのか」と疑義を持たれることがないよう、カーリングの普及に力を注いできました。
一方で、専用施設が供用開始となった以上、普及だけではなく、競技力向上にも取り組まなければなりません。
盛岡市アイスリンクを、単に「カーリングができる施設」として終わらせるのではなく、競技者が集い、競い合い、次のステージを目指す場所にしていく必要がある。
そのような思いから、本大会は「競技力向上のための大会」として位置づけ、開催を続けてまいりました。
開催以後の経緯
2015年の第1回大会は、盛岡市アイスリンクが9月に供用開始となったこともあり、9月の連休を利用して、男子の部・女子の部を同一日程で開催しました。
新しい施設における新しい大会であり、盛岡市アイスリンクの杮落としの大会でもあったことから、大変な盛り上がりを見せました。
しかし、大会の持続可能性を考えると、毎年秋の連休に開催することは、参加者の御家族の理解を得にくくなる可能性がありました。また、男子の部と女子の部を連休中に同時開催することは、大会運営側の負担も大きく、早晩、運営が破綻する可能性もありました。
そこで、男子の部と女子の部を分けて開催することとし、盛岡という地域の利点を活かした大会づくりを目指してきました。また、開催時期につきましては、ゴールデンウイーク明けから5月末まで、盛岡市アイスリンクはアイスメンテナンス期間として休業することもあり、休業明けから7月くらいまでは、新しい氷で競技をすることができることから、新しい氷で出場選手の皆さんには切磋琢磨して欲しい、と考えました。
盛岡には東北新幹線の停車駅があり、東京からも約2時間でアクセスできます。盛岡市アイスリンクは盛岡駅からも2km弱と近く、金曜日の夜まで仕事をしていても、土曜日の朝から大会に参加することができます。もちろん、そうではない地域もありますが、日曜日に大会を終え、月曜日には多くの地域では何事もなかったかのように通常の仕事に戻ることもできます。
本大会は、
「一般的なビジネスパーソンでも参加でき、かつ参加チームの競技レベルも一定程度担保された大会」
を目指して開催してまいりました。
大会時には、出場選手を対象としたアンケートを毎回実施しておりますが、この開催方針は、参加選手の皆様からも支持されてきたものと受け止めております。
賞金の捻出について
ワールドカーリングツアーの大会として開催する以上、賞金の設定は避けて通れません。
我が国では、賞金が設定されているカーリング大会は、まだ十分に馴染みがあるとは言えないかもしれません。しかし、選手やチームの立場から見れば、賞金額が高い大会に参加したいという心情は当然のことだと思います。
実行委員会としても、できることなら本大会の賞金額をもっと高く設定したいというのが本音です。
しかし、盛岡・岩手という地域で大会を継続していくことは、決して簡単ではありません。
岩手県は、高齢化と人口減少が進んでいる地域の一つです。また、大都市圏と比較すれば、企業数やスポンサー獲得の面でも厳しい条件があります。高額な賞金を設定するためにはスポンサーの確保が必要ですが、それは一朝一夕に実現できるものではありません。
これまで本大会は、地元企業、商店、飲食店など、地域の皆様に少しずつご理解をいただきながら、賞金を捻出してまいりました。
第9回大会からは、「芽吹き屋」様のご理解とご協力を得て、賞金額を上乗せすることができました。これは本大会にとって大きな前進でした。
それでも、他地域で開催されているワールドカーリングツアーの大会と比較すれば、もう少し賞金額を上乗せしたいという思いはあります。
だからこそ、地域の皆様のご支援を得ながら、この大会を少しずつ育てていく必要があります。そして、そのためには、何よりも参加してくださるチームの存在が不可欠です。
不本意な女子の部の開催見合わせ
コロナ禍以降、大会開催最少催行数に満たず、女子の部の開催見合わせが続いています。
これは、実行委員会としても大変不本意な状況です。
なぜ女子の部を開催できないのか。
どうすれば参加していただけるのか。
毎年、さまざまな方々のご意見を伺いながら考えてきました。
休みを確保できない。
子どもの面倒を見なければならない。
家族との予定が合わない。
メンバーが揃わない。
そのような声を伺ってきました。
また、近年は各地でカーリング大会や関連イベントが再び増えてきており、限られた日程の中で、他大会やイベントとの重複を避けながら開催日を設定することも年々難しくなっています。
実行委員会としても、各地の大会・イベントの情報収集に努め、可能な限り参加しやすい日程を模索してまいりました。しかし、日程を調整した結果、別の大会やイベントと重なってしまうこともあり、すべてのチームにとって参加しやすい日程を設定することの難しさを痛感しています。
さらに、岩手県内で開催される伝統行事や大規模イベントのうち、県外からの来訪者が多く見込まれるものについては、参加チームの宿泊確保に支障が生じる可能性があるため、大会開催日程の候補から外すようにしています。地方都市で大会を開催する以上、競技日程だけでなく、参加者の移動や宿泊の確保も含めて考えなければなりません。
このように、女子の部を開催できない背景には、チーム編成の難しさだけでなく、日程調整、他大会・イベントとの重複、宿泊環境など、複数の要因が重なっているものと受け止めています。
しかし、これを解決すれば女子の部を開催できる、という決定的な要因は、まだ見つけられていません。もしかすると、我が国における女性カーラーがおかれた構造的な問題も背景にあるのかもしれません。
参加費をもっと安くし、賞金額をもっと高く設定できれば、状況が変わるのかもしれません。
しかし、前述のとおり、本大会は地域の皆様に少しずつご理解をいただきながら、何とか継続してきた大会です。これも一朝一夕に解決できる問題ではありません。
SNSなどでは、「どうせ開催できないのであれば、最初から女子の部は募集しなければよいのではないか」「ミックスの大会にすればよいのではないか」といった意見を目にすることもあります。
確かに、冬季オリンピックではミックスダブルスのカテゴリーも追加され、カーリング競技の幅は広がっています。ミックスやミックスダブルスにも大きな意義があることは、実行委員会としても理解しています。
しかし、カーリング競技の基本は、あくまで男女別の4人制です。
本大会は、競技レベル向上のための大会です。
そして、「一般的なビジネスパーソンでも参加でき、かつ参加チームの競技レベルも一定程度担保された大会」を目指してきました。
だからこそ、参加チームが集まらないからといって、最初から女子の部を設けないという選択は、実行委員会として本意ではありません。
女性カーラーへの扉を、こちらから閉ざしたくはありません。
開催できない年が続いていることは事実です。
それでも、女子の部を募集し続けることには意味があると考えています。
盛岡で試合をしたい。
競技者として挑戦したい。
世界ランキングポイントの対象となる大会に出場したい。
そう考える女性カーラーの皆様に対して、参加の機会を残しておきたい。
これが、私たちの率直な思いです。
世界ランキングポイントについて
本大会は、国内で開催され、かつ世界ランキング算出のためのポイントを獲得できる数少ない大会の一つです。
海外で開催される大規模大会では、より多くのポイントを獲得できる機会があります。
一方で、国内でポイント獲得の機会を確保しておくことには、大きな意味があると考えています。
今後、わずか数ポイントの差が、チームの位置づけや活動の選択肢に影響する場面も想定されます。
そのような時に、国内で挑戦できる大会が一つでも多く存在していることは、日本のカーリング界にとって決して小さな意味ではないはずです。
本大会は、決して大規模な大会ではありません。
賞金額も、運営体制も、まだ十分とは言えない部分があります。
それでも、地方都市で、カーリング専用施設を活かし、地域の皆様のご支援を受けながら、ワールドカーリングツアーの大会を継続していくことには意味があると信じています。
参加を検討されているチームの皆様へ
男子の部は、現時点で6チームのエントリーをいただき、開催を正式に決定しました。
しかし、8チームに達しなければ、ワールドカーリングツアーのポイントを付与することができません。
男子の部につきましては、6月20日まで追加エントリーを受け付けております。
女子の部は、現時点で3チームのエントリーにとどまっており、厳しい状況です。
しかし、実行委員会としては、最後まで開催の可能性を探りたいと考えています。
女子の部につきましては、6月15日を第一次締切とし、6月21日頃を目途に開催可否を判断する予定です。
日程の都合、仕事、家庭の事情、メンバー編成など、参加が簡単ではないことは承知しております。
また今年は6月に日本カーリング選手権が開催されることもあり、オフシーズンとの絡みで難しい時期であることは理解しておりますが、次の世代を担う方々や、あと1歩のところで日本カーリング選手権への出場を逃し続けている…といったチームのエントリーもお待ちしております。
本大会への参加を、ぜひ前向きにご検討ください。
この大会は、参加してくださるチームがあって初めて成り立ちます。
そして、参加してくださるチームがあるからこそ、地域の皆様にも、この大会を続ける意味を伝えることができます。
第10回大会にふさわしい大会となるよう、実行委員会として準備を進めてまいります。

A Message from the Organizing Committee: Toward the Continued Future of the Event and the Women’s Division
This is the Organizing Committee of the Morioka City Ice Rink Memorial Cup.
We are currently preparing for the “Mebukiya presents 10th Morioka City Ice Rink Memorial Cup.”
As of now, we have received entries from six teams for the Men’s Division. Accordingly, we have officially decided to hold the Men’s Division, and we have already notified the representatives of the teams that have entered.
For the Women’s Division, however, we have received only three entry so far. Since we plan to make a decision on whether the Women’s Division can be held around June 21, we have set the first entry deadline as June 15. We sincerely hope to receive further entries.
This event is held as a World Curling Tour points event. However, WCT ranking points cannot be awarded unless eight teams enter the division.
For this reason, we will continue accepting additional entries for the Men’s Division until June 20.
We would be most grateful if teams would give serious consideration to entering this event.
About the Morioka City Ice Rink Memorial Cup
The Morioka City Ice Rink Memorial Cup was launched in 2015 to commemorate the opening of Morioka City Ice Rink, a year-round ice sports facility with two dedicated curling sheets.
Coincidentally, the current framework of the World Curling Tour also began around that time, and this event has been part of that movement from its very first year.
Before 2015, there was no dedicated curling facility in Iwate Prefecture. For that reason, one of our major goals was to help local residents become familiar with the sport of curling. Even after the dedicated facility was built, we felt it was important to ensure that citizens would not question why such a facility had been created. Promoting curling to the public was therefore a central part of our activities.
However, once a dedicated curling facility had opened, promotion alone was no longer enough. We also had to work toward improving the competitive level of the sport.
We did not want Morioka City Ice Rink to remain simply “a facility where curling can be played.” We wanted it to become a place where competitive curlers could gather, compete, improve, and aim for the next stage.
With that in mind, this event has been positioned as a competition for strengthening the competitive level of curling, and we have continued to hold it with that purpose.
History of the Event
The first Morioka City Ice Rink Memorial Cup was held in 2015, using the September holiday period, shortly after Morioka City Ice Rink opened. The Men’s and Women’s Divisions were held on the same schedule as the inaugural competition at the new facility.
As a new event at a new facility, and as the opening competition for Morioka City Ice Rink, the tournament generated great excitement.
However, when considering the sustainability of the event, it became clear that holding the tournament every year during the autumn holiday period could make it difficult for players to gain the understanding of their families. In addition, holding both the Men’s and Women’s Divisions simultaneously over a holiday period placed a significant burden on the organizers, and there was a real concern that this format would eventually become unsustainable.
We therefore decided to separate the Men’s and Women’s Divisions and to make full use of Morioka’s geographic advantages.
Morioka is served by the Tohoku Shinkansen and is approximately two hours from Tokyo by bullet train. Morioka City Ice Rink is also located close to Morioka Station. This means that players can work until Friday evening, travel to Morioka, compete from Saturday morning, finish the event on Sunday, and return to work as usual on Monday.
Our aim has been to create an event that ordinary working adults can participate in, while still maintaining a meaningful competitive standard.
At each tournament, we have conducted surveys of participating players. We understand from these responses that this basic concept has been supported by many of the players who have taken part.
Securing Prize Money
As a World Curling Tour event, prize money is an important element.
In Japan, curling events with prize money are still not necessarily familiar to everyone. However, from the perspective of players and teams, it is only natural that events with higher prize money may be more attractive.
As the organizing committee, we would also like to offer higher prize money if possible. That is our honest feeling.
However, continuing to hold this event in Morioka and Iwate is not easy.
Iwate is one of the regions in Japan facing significant population aging and decline. Compared with major metropolitan areas, it is also more difficult to secure sponsors and corporate support. Higher prize money requires sponsorship, but this cannot be achieved overnight.
Over the years, we have continued to build this event step by step, gaining understanding and support from local companies, shops, restaurants, and other community partners.
Since the 9th tournament, we have been fortunate to receive the support of Mebukiya, which has enabled us to increase the prize money. This was a major step forward for the event.
Even so, compared with other World Curling Tour events held in other regions, we would still like to increase the prize money further.
That is why we believe this event must continue to grow gradually, together with the support of the local community. And for that to happen, the participation of teams is absolutely essential.
The Unfortunate Suspension of the Women’s Division
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have repeatedly been unable to hold the Women’s Division because the minimum number of participating teams has not been reached.
This is a deeply disappointing situation for the organizing committee.
Why have we been unable to hold the Women’s Division?
What would make it easier for teams to participate?
Every year, we have listened to various opinions and continued to think carefully about these questions.
We have heard many reasons.
It is difficult to take time off work.
Players need to take care of their children.
Family schedules do not align.
It is difficult to gather enough team members.
These are all real and understandable challenges.
In recent years, curling events and related competitions have also been increasing again across various regions. Within a limited calendar, it has become increasingly difficult to set dates while avoiding conflicts with other tournaments and events.
The organizing committee has made efforts to gather information about events held in other regions and to search for dates that would be as accessible as possible. Even so, there have been cases where, after we adjusted our schedule, another tournament or event was scheduled for the same period. We have keenly felt how difficult it is to find dates that are convenient for all teams.
In addition, when major traditional festivals or large-scale events are held in Iwate Prefecture and are expected to attract many visitors from outside the prefecture, we exclude those dates from consideration in order to avoid problems with accommodation for participating teams. When holding an event in a regional city, we must consider not only the competition schedule itself, but also travel and accommodation for participants.
In this way, the difficulty of holding the Women’s Division is not caused by a single factor. It appears to be the result of several overlapping issues: team formation, scheduling, conflicts with other events, and accommodation conditions.
Even so, we have not yet found one decisive factor that, if solved, would make it possible to hold the Women’s Division. It may also reflect broader structural issues surrounding women curlers in Japan.
If we could lower the entry fee and significantly increase the prize money, perhaps the situation might change. However, as described above, this event has been sustained only by gradually gaining the understanding and support of the local community. This is not something that can be solved immediately.
On social media and elsewhere, we sometimes see comments such as, “If the Women’s Division cannot be held anyway, why not stop offering it from the beginning?” or “Why not make it a mixed event instead?”
Certainly, mixed doubles has been added to the Olympic program, and the range of curling competitions has expanded. We fully understand that mixed and mixed doubles events have great value.
However, the foundation of curling remains the four-player team game, played separately in men’s and women’s divisions.
This event is intended to raise the competitive level of the sport.
It has also aimed to be an event that ordinary working adults can participate in, while still maintaining a meaningful competitive standard.
For that reason, we do not believe it would be right for the organizing committee to close the door on the Women’s Division simply because entries have been difficult to secure.
We do not want to close the door on women curlers from our side.
It is true that there have been years in which the Women’s Division could not be held.
Even so, we believe that continuing to offer the Women’s Division has meaning.
For women curlers who wish to compete in Morioka,
who wish to challenge themselves as competitive athletes,
and who wish to take part in an event eligible for world ranking points,
we want to keep that opportunity open.
That is our honest feeling.
Of course, from a purely practical point of view, it might be possible to hold only the Men’s Division on a stable basis.
However, we are carefully considering whether that would truly be the proper form of this event.
Holding both the Men’s and Women’s Divisions, and continuing the event in a way that contributes to both the promotion and strengthening of curling, has been the original purpose of this tournament and the vision we have pursued.
If it becomes difficult to maintain that form, there may come a time when we must seriously consider how this event should continue in the future, or whether it can continue at all.
That is why, this year as well, we want to explore every possibility until the very end to hold the Women’s Division.
World Ranking Points
This event is one of the few tournaments held in Japan where teams have the opportunity to earn points for the world ranking system.
Large-scale events held overseas may offer opportunities to earn more points.
At the same time, we believe it is highly meaningful to maintain opportunities to earn points within Japan.
In the future, even a difference of a few points may influence a team’s position, opportunities, or choices.
For that reason, having even one more domestic event where teams can challenge themselves for ranking points should be meaningful for the curling community in Japan.
This is not a large-scale event.
The prize money and the organizing structure are not yet sufficient in every respect.
Even so, we believe there is value in continuing a World Curling Tour event in a regional city, using a dedicated curling facility and supported by the local community.
To Teams Considering Entry
The Men’s Division has officially been confirmed, with six teams entered so far.
However, unless the division reaches eight teams, World Curling Tour points cannot be awarded.
Additional entries for the Men’s Division will be accepted until June 20.
The Women’s Division currently has only one team entered, and the situation is difficult.
Nevertheless, the organizing committee would like to explore every possibility until the very end.
For the Women’s Division, the first entry deadline is June 15, and we plan to decide around June 21 whether the division can be held.
We fully understand that participation is not always easy. Teams must consider work schedules, family responsibilities, travel, and team formation.
Even so, we sincerely ask teams to consider entering this event.
This tournament exists only because teams choose to participate.
And because teams participate, we are able to show the local community why this event matters and why it should continue.
We will continue preparing so that the 10th Morioka City Ice Rink Memorial Cup will be an event worthy of this milestone.
We sincerely look forward to receiving entries for both the Men’s and Women’s Divisions.
